Michaela Coel wins UK New Talent Award at the Women in Film and Television Awards

Congratulations to the wonderfully talented Michaela Coel for winning the Fremantle Media UK New Talent Award at the Women in Film and Television Awards which took place on Friday 2nd December 2016 at the Park Lane Hilton.

The WFTV Awards have been running for 26 years.  Previous winners include Regina Moriarty.

Michaela Coel is a poet, a performance artist, an actress, a composer, a musician and a playwright but you will probably know her best as the writer, composer and star of the multi-award-winning comedy Chewing Gum which premiered on E4 in 2015.  The first series is now available worldwide on Netflix.

In November, Chewing Gum was shortlisted for Best Comedy Programme and Best Multichannel Programme at the Broadcast 2017 awards.

It has been a great 2016 for the extremely talented Michaela who has this year won recognition for her work and her performance as Tracey.   In March Michaela won two RTS Programme Awards in the Comedy Performance and Breakthrough categories – the latter being a new category at the awards.  At the RTS awards, she was also nominated in the Comedy Writing category.

In May, Michaela won a BAFTA Craft Award in the Breakthrough Talent and a BAFTA TV Award for Female Performance in a Comedy.  Michaela and the series also earned BAFTA nominations in the Writer – Comedy and Scripted Comedy categories

The series also won a Screen Nation Film & Television Award in the public-voted category of Favourite Comedy Production, and not only has Chewing Gum won acclaim in the UK, Series One won the Special Jury’s Choice Award (Coup de Coeur du Jury Award) in the European section of the Festival De La Fiction which took place in La Rochelle in France on the 17th September.
